GV II*
Cottage, originally a small farmhouse. Circa mid C17 with circa C18 rear outshot and
porch. Coursed granite rubble with large moorstone quoins and grounders. Rag slate
roof with hipped end on left (north west) and gable end on right (south east). Squat
stone rubble internal end stack on right with dripcourse.
Plan: 2 cell plan; entrance on left leading into a narrow room which forms an
entrance lobby and larger hall on right heated by the end stack. Circa C18 rear
outshot providing service room and porch to front of original entrance on left.
Exterior: 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 1-window front. Round headed granite arch to
entrance on left of front with later plank door and circa C18 or C19 granite rubble
porch with rag slate roof. Small hall window to right of centre with granite lintel
and cill. One smaller first floor window below eaves at centre with granite cill.
These are probably the original openings and have later 2-light casements with
horizontal glazing bars. Similar windows on left hand (north west) end, on ground
and first floors. No windows on right hand gable end wall to south east. Catslide
slate roof over continuous rear outshot.
Interior: Interior plan intact ceiling beams appear to have been replaced. Timber
lintel to fireplace. Interior not accessible at time of survey (1986).
Leaze is a rake unaltered survival of a small moorland 2-cell house of the C17. The
porch and rear outshot are interesting developments improving the accommodation
probably in C18. Very few unaltered C17 farmhouses on this tiny scale remain and it
is probably the best example in Cornwall.
