Description

TREVALGA TREVALGA
SX 09 SE
1/239 Court Farmhouse
GV II
Private house, formerly the lower end of a farmhouse in Trevalga village. Circa late
C16, possibly with earlier origins. Slate stone rubble. Slate roof with gable ends.
Stone rubble stack on right hand gable end. Extended on front right with stone
rubble parallel 1-room wing which has gable ends and a brick end stack on right.
Plan: The plan has been considerably altered, originally of 2 rooms (or more) and a
through passage. In circa late C20 the higher end on left was considerably
remodelled, the front wall largely rebuilt and an extension added on the front left.
This higher side was divided above the through passage to form a separate house known
as Little Court; Court Farmhouse now consists of the through passage and lower right
hand room of the earlier building. This lower room is heated by an end stack (with
cloam oven removed) and is of sizeable dimensions, considerably larger than the
service room normally associated with a Cornish farmhouse of this size. Semi-
circular turretted stair in projection to rear towards the higher side. In circa
1870s a front wing of 1-room plan, heated by an end stack, was added to the front of
the right hand room. In circa mid to late C20 probably contemporary with the
remodelling of the higher side, the front entrance to the through passage was
blocked, a window inserted and the passage was used as a scullery. The entrance in
the left hand side wall of the front wing then became the main entrance. A service
outshot which possibly continued across the rear elevation, below the stair turret,
was possibly removed in the mid C20.
2 storeys. Asymmetrical 4 window front with Cl9 wing on right. Earlier range on
left with 2 C20 windows on ground floor, the left hand window in the partly blocked
earlier entrance. 4-pane window and 4-pane sash on first floor. C19 wing on right
has a 3-tripartite hornless sash on the ground floor, 2 hornless 4-pane sashes on the
first floor and a C20 glazed door in the side on the left.
The rear elevation has a wide C20 window in a blocked door opening on the ground
floor now lighting the large right hand room and a C20 window lighting the stair
turret. Below the eaves there is evidence of part rebuilding suggesting that the
eaves have been raised. However, as there is no evidence of this in the gable end,
it would appear to suggest that either the gable end has been part rebuilt or that
the disturbance is associated with a lean-to outshot which has now been removed.
Interior : Circa C19 ceilings in through passage and possibly early C18 ceiling beams
with slight chamfer in the right hand room. Fireplace blocked and Rayburn stove
inserted. The treads to the turreted stair are carpeted but are probably of slate.
First floor not accessible.
Court Farmhouse was originally 1 of at least 3 farmhouses (qv Trevalga Farmhouse and
Churchtown Farmhouse) in the small village of Trevalga. All 3 are in close proximity
to the church (qv Church of St Petroc); Court Farmhouse is directly to the north east
of the church.
