MADRON Poltair House (now called
SW 43 SE Poltair Hospital) (at SW
7/349 45703165)

Country house in use as a hospital. Circa 1905-12; rebuilt after a fire in 1905.
Granite ashlar with granite dressings. Hipped dry Delabole slate roofs with
granite chimneys over the cross walls and over the projecting corners. 3 roof
dormers with segmental pediments.
Plan: overall L-shaped plan. Double depth plan with 2 rooms at the front, central
cross passage between and large entrance hall behind right-hand room leading
from right hand entrance front with large porch to large central stair hall.
Behind the stair hall and entrance hall is a large service wing at right angles
to the front. Exterior: 2 storeys. Symmetrical 2:1:2 bay garden front with
central doorway. Plinth, mid-floor band, plain parapet and pilasters corners
broken forward and surmounted by panelled chimneys. The 4 ground floor bays,
left and right, have 3-light canted bay windows. Glazed door with overlight
and original 12-pane horned sashes. Entrance front has similar detailing and
original doors and windows. Interiors: entrance hall and stair hall has original
features in C18 style including open-well stair with turned balusters and modillioned
plaster ceiling cornices.
