Farmhouse, including adjoining front garden walls, earth-closets and rear courtyard
walls. C17, remodelled in the C18, extended in the C19. C19 granite rubble front
with granite dressings, otherwise painted rubble walls. Hipped grouted scantle slate
roof with brick chimney over the side walls at the front, grouted scantle slate roof
with chimneys over the gable ends of the parallel rear range (original house) with
large C17 rubble stack over the left hand end.
Plan: trouble depth plan: 2-rooms-wide. Circa mid-Cl9 house at the front with
entrance hall between the 2 front parlours; pantry behind left-hand room ; stair hall
behind wider right-hand room and 2-room-plan of original C17 house at the rear with
cross passage and second stair between the rooms. Wide blocked opening in the-axial
wall indicates that this may have been the C17 front wall, possibly remodelled in the
C18 as 5 window front. There are ships timbers reused as lintels over these
openings. Later (probably C19) lean-to washhouse at rear left.
Exterior: 2-storeys. Nearly symmetrical 3 window south west front with doorway and
window over, slightly left of middle. Original circa mid-cl9 door and windows: 4
panel door with overlight; hornless sashes with glazing bars.
Rear is slightly irregular 3-window 'front' with approximately central doorway with
window over; wide opening under left-hand window with circa late C18 or early C19 -
20-pane sash; wider opening right of doorway with circa mid-C18 3-light casement with
2 original 8-pane lights with thick glazing bars and C18 horizontal-sliding sashes to
square first floor openings. Old ledged door. On the right is a lean-to with
doorway into left-hand side and chimney at rear right, adjoining corner of house.
Interior: C17 features: possibly late C17 plaster ceiling in rear right-hand room,
with round central mouldings surrounding a Tudor rose; fireplace in rear left hand
room with chamfered granite jambs and lintel and deep niche on its left (remodelled
in the C18). C18 features: softwood plank and muntin partitions; ceiling beams and
some doors. C19 features: front part of house has most of its original features
including stair; parlour ceilings (ceiling band in right-hand room) panelled doors
and archway at rear of entrance hall.
Rubble garden walls adjoin at either side of the front of the house. Wall at left
adjoins a 2-cell earth closet with doorway at either side. There are 2 niches under
the side facing north east.
