7/60 Nos. 1,2 and 3 Manor Houses
(formerly listed under Manor
10.2.67 Tannery)
GV II*
House, now three houses. Probably C16 - early C17; probably altered circa late C17,
with alterations and additions of mid - late C19 and C20. Slatestone rubble.
Thatched roof with gable ends. Gable end stack to right and axial stack to left with
brick shafts. External front lateral stack to the hall with rubble shaft and granite
quoins and carved stone gargoyles to the cornice.
Plan: 3-room and through passage plan; each room is now a separate house, with No. 1
to left being the inner room, No. 2 the hall, and including at first floor the
chamber over the through passage. No. 3 to right includes the through passage and
the lower end room. The lower end room, to right, is heated from a gable end stack
to right; circa late C17, the room was partitioned to from a small rear room,
unheated. The hall is to left of the through passage, heated from a front lateral
stack, and with a stair tower to rear, probably also an addition of the later C17.
The inner room is to end left, heated from the axial stack. When the house was
divided, the inner room had a doorway inserted in the front wall, probably originally
the site of a window; there appears to have been a 2-storey bay on the front of the
inner room, probably removed circa mid C19. The hall has a doorway inserted in the
front wall, to the left of the external stack, probably circa mid C19. No. 3, to
right, uses the doorway to the passage as an entrance, with one room to right. The
central house uses the stair in the stair tower; No. 1, to left, has a straight stair
inserted in the rear of the room, and No. 3, to right, has a straight stair inserted
in the rear room, to left.
Exterior: 2 storeys, asymmetrical 4-window front. No. 1, to left, has C19 6-
panelled door with overlight and timber lintel, and 2-light 6-pane C19 casement with
timber lintel at ground floor. The masonry indicates some rebuilding, possibly
originally with 2 window openings. At first floor there is a 2-light 6-pane
casement, probably of late C19, formerly a window opening a slightly lower level.
The rear of No. 1 is entirely concealed by a C20 single storey lean-to with 2 windows
and a door.
No.2 has a C20 half-glazed door with 7-pane sidelight; first floor has 2-light 5-pane
casement with timber lintel. The front lateral stack is curved through ground and
first floors, with a square plan shaft above. At the rear, the stair tower is to
left, with 2-light 5-pane C19 casement. Single storey C20 addition along the whole
of the rear.
No. 3 has a recessed doorway with roughly chamfered timber lintel and granite steps;
C19 6-panelled door with early C19 21-pane casement with L hinges to left. Above,
there is a 2-light 6-pane casement with L hinges and slate cill and timber lintel, of
C19. To right, at ground floor there are two 2-light 6-pane casements, C20
replacements, with chamfered and step-stopped timber lintels. At first floor there
is a similar 2-light 6-pane casement with plain timber lintel. To right a smaller
blocked window opening. The rear has C20 window at ground floor, and C20 2-light
casement at first floor with timber lintel. Some render remaining. Single storey
C20 addition to right, concealing the rear doorway to the passage.
Interior: No. 1 has ground floor room with plain moulded plaster cornice, complete,
carried around the splayed reveal for the front window and the doorway. Straight
stair inserted in the rear of the room, with cupboard under the stair with 2-panelled
door with H hinges. C20 fireplace. There is a solid masony wall between the inner
room and the hall to right.
No. 2 consists of the hall at ground floor, which has been partitioned to form two
rooms. In the main room there is one very large chamfered beam, with moulded cross
beams. The winder stair in the stair tower has been rebuilt in C20. The rear wall
has a cupboard recess with a door with strap hinges. The front lateral fireplace is
blocked. At first floor the chamber over the through passage has a chamfered wooden
doorway with run-out stops, the door has raised fillets with studs and strap hinges.
The chamber has a plain plaster barrel ceiling with part of a moulded cornice
remaining. The chamber over the hall has a similar doorway with similar door with
studs and strap hinges; this chamber also has a plain plaster barrel ceiling with a
central moulded pendant and moulded cornice. On the rear wall is what may be a
chimneybreast, with moulded cornice and chamfered lintel, but there is no external
sign of a stack. Only the feet of the principal rafters are visible and these are
curved.
No. 3 consists of the through passage and the lower end room; there was formerly a
wooden screen partition between the passage and the hall to left, replaced by C20
concrete block wall. The passage has a stone floor with granite cill to the rear
doorway, with plank door. To right, the doorway to the lower end room has early C18
double panelled and fielded doors; the room has plaster ceiling with central circular
design and moulded cornice. Fine bolection-moulded chimneypiece with moulded mantel.
The front windows have splayed reveals. The room was probably partitioned circa
early C18, with an early C18 2-panelled door to rear. In the rear room, two large
chamfered beams remain; the front room was ceiled below the level of the beams. At
first floor, the room has been partitioned, probably in C19, all beams are chamfered
with run-out stops, very irregularly hewn, with one main large chamfered beam. There
does not appear to have been a fireplace at first floor.
The roof structure was not inspected but the curved feet of the principal rafters
visible in the chambers suggest that an early roof survives.
