House, now two houses. Circa mid C17, with some alterations of C19 and C20.
Slatestone rubble; some rebuilding in brick of C19. Slurried scantle slate roof with
ridge tiles and gable ends. Partly roofed in slate and asbestos slate. The cross
wing to front left has gable end stack to front with rubble shaft; front lateral
stack in rubble with C20 brick shaft to right.
Plan: Three-room plan, with entrance to a small lobby. The cross wing is to left,
with the front room heated from a gable end stack at the front; there is a small
central room partitioned and unheated, and the rear of the wing is now part of Cliff
Cottage and would originally have been a boat shed or store. All the living
accommodation is at first floor, the whole of the ground floor below the main rooms
being a pilchard cellar, with entrance at the front. The room to right of the lobby
is heated from the front lateral stack and the room to end right appears never to
have been heated. This is a most unusual plan survival, the living rooms entered
from an external stair and the pilchard cellar with a separate entrance, unaltered.
Exterior: 2 storeys, asymmetrical front with the gable end of the cross wing to left;
this has a large external stack, and 2-light 2-pane C19 casement with timber lintel
at ground floor, with late C19 4-pane sash at first floor. There is an external
stone stair with slate treads leading to a C19 4-panelled door; large external stack
to right of the doorway. To right, at ground floor there is a plank door to the
pilchard cellar; at first floor at late C19 4-pane sash. The first floor level is
rebuilt in brick. The left end abuts the adjoining house. The right end has early
C20 2-light 3-pane casement at ground floor. First floor has late C19 6-pane sash
and small plate-glass sash. At the rear there is a single light 4-pane casement to
left to the cellar. To right is a single storey rubble lean-to, extended in C20 with
C20 window and door. The rear gable end of the cross wing is to right, rendered; at
ground floor there is a C20 window to left and small C20 window at ground and first
floors to right. The outer side of the wing is painted.
Interior: In the pilchard cellar, the floor is cobbled, with a drainage channel
leading to a drain hole in the rear wall; the ceiling has roughly hewn beams. Along
the front wall of the cellar are the sockets for the pressing poles for pilchards.
This is a most unusual survival, a complete fish cellar with integral living
accommodation. On the first floor the lobby entrance has a short section of C18
wooden screen remaining to right. The main room is to right, with boxed beams; the
front lateral fireplace has C20 range inserted and C19 mantel. There is a cupboard
behind the entrance lobby. The front room in the cross wing has C19 chimneypiece.
The roof has roughly hewn principal rafters, halved and pegged at the apex; cambered
collars are pegged to the principal rafters, not halved. Some trusses have been
replaced but the roof structure remains largely intact.
