Farmhouse, originally grange of Byland Abbey (Yorks) established in C14.
Coursed, squared rubble with quoins. Parapet projects on all 4 sides; upper
works altered to accommodate (C17?) graduated slate roof. Original stone
chimney (stepped and corniced) projects to rear, west end chimney is Cl7
addition; adjoining range to front replaces original chimney (internal 1st floor
entry to range passes under large 2-centred fireplace arch). Door to 3-storey,
4-bay front replaces earlier window; late Cl9 lean-to porch has late C20 plank
door. Original newel stair projects from 1st floor level on north-west corner.
Damaged panel to 1st floor left has Bellingham coat of arms. Square,
mullioned C17 2-light windows to all 3 floors (some blocked); 2nd floor left has
blocked C14 2-light window (trefoiled ogee heads in square frame with mullion,
hoodmould and labels). East wall has C15 5-light oriel window (trefoiled
semicircular heads) supported on moulded bracket terminating in human head
(similar head to panel in gable above). Windows to rear are mainly C19/C20 with
one C14 single-light window to 2nd floor; central projection may have housed
original entrance with stair leading to 1st floor. Front range of coursed,
squared rubble with quoins under graduated slate roof; 2 builds, late C18 with
late C19 extension. Outbuilding to rear joined to house in late C19.
