Description

JACOBSTOWE
SS 50 SE
7/155 Coombe Farmhouse and adjoining
- outbuildings to north-west and
- south-east
II

Farmhouse and adjoining outbuildings. Circa early to mid C17, extended in C18 and
late C19. Plastered cob, left-hand of front refaced in stone rubble and stone
rubble extension to rear wing. Thatched roof with gabled ends, the rear wing has a
half-hipped end. The rear slopes of the main range roof and the roofs of the lower
outbuildings to left and right are clad in corrugated iron.
Plan: the 2-room plan main range is the original early to mid C17 house. The
larger right-hand room at the lower end was the hall/kitchen heated from a large
gable end stack. The smaller left-hand room is unheated. There was probably
originally a cross- or through-passage between the two rooms, the front doorway of
which is in a slight projection and now has a porch added probably in the C18. The
lower right-hand side partition of the passage has been removed, a lobby formed
inside the front doorway and a straight staircase inserted at the back of the left-
hand room. These alterations may have been carried out in the C18 which is probably
when the unheated rear wing was built to the left of centre, or alternatively when
the rear wing was extended at the back in the C19. The outbuildings at either end
of the main range are probably C18 additions, that to the left is single storey and
the outbuilding to the right has a loft above.
Exterior: 2 storeys. Almost symmetrical 3-bay front with asymmetrical
fenestration. The centre bay projects slightly and has a gabled half-dormer above
with C19 or earlier shaped bargeboards and a C17 3-light first floor window with an
ovolo-moulded wooden frame and mullions. The central doorway in the projection has
a C19 plank door and a circa C18 rendered gabled porch with a bench inside to the
left. The other windows at the front are C19, 1-, 2 and 3-light casements with
glazing bars, one on each floor to the left and one on the ground floor to the
right. To the right of the front the slight projection is probably an oven.
The single storey cob outbuilding to the left has a corrugated iron roof with a
rebuilt concrete block gable end and a doorway at the front with an old plank door.
The outbuilding to the right is one storey with a loft and has a corrugated iron
gable-ended roof and a ground floor doorway at the front with a loft doorway above
with an old plank door.
At the back mostly late C19 and/or C20 casements. The rear wing to right of centre
has been extended in stone rubble and has a half-hipped thatched roof.
Interior was seen only from the windows. The right-hand room has a chamfered main
cross-beam with step stops and a small axial beam, also with step stops from the
cross-beam to the fireplace lintel which also has step stops; the large fireplace
has an oven. The chamfered half-beams at either end of the right-hand room appear
to have similar stops. The smaller unheated left-hand room has a chamfered axial
beam.
The first floor was not inspected and the roof structure of the main range was not
seen. The rear wing has straight principal rafters.
