Description

CHULMLEIGH THE SQUARE, Chulmleigh
sS 6814-6914
7/110 London House and Colnet House
GV II
House, now divided into 2 occupations. Circa 1870 with early C20 alterations and
rear extension. Rendered stone rubble, rear portions brick. Slate roof with timber
cornice and brick end stacks. Stack to gable end of rear kitchen range.
Plan: Overall plan originally appears to have consisted of 3 principal rooms, with
direct entrance into large room at left end, and a narrower room of equal size to
each side of entrance passage to right. Passage leads to 2-storey gable-ended rear
kitchen wing with cellar to rear of right-hand room forming L-shaped plan, and to
principal dog-leg staircase on left side in gabled stair projection at right angles
to the passage to rear of middle room in the angle of the L-shape. The division of
the 2 properties occurs on the left side of the entrance passage, but Colnet House on
tie right retains the principal staircase. Interior of London House altered in C20,
the large room at the left end having been divided into 2 and a staircase added to
the rear of the resulting 'entrance' hall. The staircase forms part of a 2-storey
gable-ended rear wing added when the house was divided into 2 occupations to provide
a kitchen wing to London House at the left end, and a shared covered courtyard
between the 2 properties to the rear of the 2 staircases.
Exterior: 2 storeys. 4-window range in all. All late C19 12 paned sashes with
margin glazing bars except for second bay from left which has narrow 4 paned sash
with margin glazing bars above 6 panelled door with overlight. C20 door to Colnet
House.
Interior: Some C19 joinery survives. Right-hand room of London House has Adam style
chimneypiece and ceiling centrepiece.
