Three Gates Farmhouse
II
Former farmhouse. Early C17 with later C17 addition at right end. Whitewashed
rendered cob and stone, front wall said to have been partly rebuilt in C20; slate
roof (formerly thatched), gabled at ends; front lateral stack and projecting right
end stack to main block, right end stack to addition.
Plan: L plan. The early C17 main block is 2 rooms wide with a wide central passage
and an unheated 1 room plan rear right wing, probably originally a dairy. 1 room
plan kitchen addition at right end of main range said to be C17. Single storey rear
lean-to probably post C17.
Exterior: 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 3+1 window front with and gabled central porch to
the main block which has C19 or C20 casement windows with glazing bars. The kitchen
block at the right end has a C20 glazed porch and 1 first floor circa C18 3-light
casement with square leaded panes. Similar C18 casement on left return of main
range; timber mullioned C17 window to ground floor of rear wing in end wall.
Interior: No access at time of survey in 1986 but said to have jointed cruck roof
construction below later roof timbers, open fireplaces and stopped cross beams.
