6/107 West Kimmings Farmhouse and
farmbuilding adjoining, at the
south east
II
Tenanted farmhouse and adjoining farmbuilding. Probably late C18/early C19. Cob and
stone rubble; corrugated asbestos roof, gabled at ends (thatched until at least 1960,
old list description), house with a left end stack with a brick shaft and an axial
stack with a stone shaft. Adjoining farmbuilding with a corrugated iron monopitch
roof.
Plan: Sited on steeply sloping ground which drops away to the north, the house faces
approximately south and is a single depth 2 room plan with a central entrance,
kitchen to the left (east), parlour to the right (west). A bank barn adjoins at the
west end with access to the loft on the south side and shippon below with access from
the north side.
Exterior: 2 storey house. Asymmetrical 3 window front with regular fenestration.
C20 timber front door; C19 or C20 3-light timber casements with glazing bars to left
and right, similar 2-light casement above front door. The farmbuilding to the right
has a large double doorway with cheeks. The rear (north) elevation of the
farmbuilding is impressive because of the site, with 4 round-headed openings to the
shippon on the ground floor with rectangular section piers. The north elevation of
the house has 1 first floor 2-light casement and 3 ground floor casements.
Interior: 2 large open fireplaces to the house, the left hand fireplace with a bread
oven. The floorboards adjacent to the north wall of the farmbuilding have been
removed to allow fodder to be dropped directly into the mangers below.
