8/29 The Old Poor House

House. Late C17. Cob and rubble core, smooth-rendered and colourwashed, straw-
thatched roof; gable end stacks with C20 brick shafts.
Plan: symmetrical 2-room plan, central lobby with straight-flight staircase, room to
each side of similar size, gable-end fireplaces.
Exterior: 2 storeys, symmetrical front of 3-windows, 2-light C19 casements with
close-set glazing bars. Central-door opening, plain C19 plank door.
Interior: each fireplace to ground floor with a chamfered wooden bressumer, that to
left with bread oven and evidence of adjacent former staircase, present stair C19.
Roof: part of the original roof survives, 2 trusses with lapped collars and ridges,
remainder renewed.
First floor stated to have been used as the Village Institute in the C19. Prominent
roadside position.
