WEST ANSTEY

New Park Farmhouse

II

Farmhouse. Probably late C16 or early C17, lower end rebuilt and main range re-
roofed in C18. Rendered stone rubble and cob. Corrugated absestos roof, half-
hipped at left end, hipped to right end. Brick shaft to axial stone rubble hall
stack. Brick shaft to rear lateral stack heating inner room.
Plan: variant 3-room and cross-passage plan, the wide cross-passage divided axially
to create unheated front and rear service rooms, the entry being almost opposite the
hall stack. To the left, lower end is an integral formerly lofted
stables/ciderhouse, and to the right, the hall with dairy outshut to rear and long
inner room beyond which has separate external front access and straight run
staircase running up beside right end wall. As the roof structure was entirely
replaced in C18, the sequence of development is not fully recoverable. The massive,
solid partition wall between the hall and inner room suggests the latter has been
rebuilt or added. The lower end with lower roof level also appears to have been
entirely rebuilt in the C18.
Exterior: 2 storeys. 5-window range. Principally late C19/early C20 fenestration,
all 2-light casements, the 3 upper storey windows towards right end with 6 panes per
light, otherwise 2 panes per light. Plank doors to main entrance and inner room.
Stable/ciderhouse has loft door over plank door.
Interior: hall has timber lintel to fireplace, the chamfer cut out, and brick lined
bread oven. Deeply chamfered cross ceiling beam and bressumers with hollow step
stops. Inner room probably has concealed ceiling beams and fireplace. Dairy
fittings intact. Stable/ciderhouse has cobbled floor.
New Park Farmhouse is an interesting example of a long-house derived plan, with the
lower end used for housing stock and the cross-passage adapted to house the service
rooms. This type of plan is shared with Hill Farmhouse and Woods, West Anstey
(q.v.).
