wall and pavement steps
GV II
Street conduit with flanking walls and steps. 1708, part of the water supply
system presented to the town by Nicholas Trist, the Lord of the Manor. Granite
in squared blocks, supported by rubble walls, cast iron railings. Main conduit
is set at outer pavement edge; under a heavy C19 rock-faced coping is a para-
bolic blind arch out of two stones and over a carved commemorative panel with
Trist around and, in raised capital letters: NICOLAUS TRIST/ARMIGER/HUIUSCE
MUNICIPII/PRAEFECTUS Do.1708! About 2 metres wide overall, and up to 2.5 metres
high, set to steep street. To left a rubble retaining wall runs down by ramp to
street level, with 2 stone steps, and a simple railing in 5 bays. To the right
a similar retaining wall with two flights of 5 stone steps and a second short
run, contained by railing in 5 bays and a return. Water supply to the conduits
not cut until 1950s.
