Country house in grounds, in two occupations. Late C18 and early to mid C19.
Scribed rendered rubble, exposed to ground floor front, slate roof. A central
hall square front block rebuilt or added to the earlier back wing, which was the
service block but now (1988) is a separate dwelling. Front block is in 3
storeys, 3 windows; ground floor has French doors with transom lights flanking,
panelled door in reveals with Greek key ornament and with transome light. First
floor has tall 12-pane sashes in moulded architrave with shoulders and flared
feet, and cill on brackets, flanking large central flat-roofed oriel with
4:16:4-pane sashes to moulded cornice. Top floor has 3 segmental-headed 6-pane
sashes in moulded architraves and with cills on brackets. Continuous glazed
verandah on 4 fluted cast iron columns, and with glazed-in section at each end;
glazing returns to right side as conservatory. Alternating quoins, modillion
cornice, hipped roof, 2 rendered stacks centred but off ridge each side. Left
return is plain, right return at ground floor has plate glass canted bays flan-
king central pair of doors with Greek key ornament; first floor 2 wide spaced
12-pane and second floor 6-pane segmental-headed sashes, all without archi-
traves. The glazed conservatory continuous across this front. Back has two
12-pane sashes and a 2-light glazing bar casement. The back unit, The Chantry,
is in 2 storeys; face towards Music Room (q.v.) has four 12-pane sashes at first
floor, and is connected to the Music Room with a glazed corridor. Far side has
at ground floor three 12-pane sashes and a pair of doors to a slate hood; at
first floor has two blank recesses and a 12-pane sash. Back, linked to out-
buildings, contains C20 main door to this section. Box eaves to a moulded
cornice, hipped roof with delicate square open bell turret to wind-vane.
Interior: Chantry House has wide entrance hall with open stair to cut string
with decorative tread ends, octagonal balusters, mahogany handrail, glazed tile
floor, cornice with egg and dart, 6-panel C19 doors. Room to right has palmette
frieze with vine leaves, heavy consoled Victorian fireplace, 2 niche cupboards.
Wide elliptical arch to pilasters between ante-room and stair, and smaller round
arch at head of stair to back rooms. Windows with panelled shutters. The
Chantry not fully inspected, has large kitchen with slate slab floor. A C20
canopy connects the back to the former farm outbuildings. A good house in
excellent condition. A large group of outbuildings (not of special interest) is
dated to C Rogers, 1840, and possibly represents the time of the major modifica-
tions to the house exterior.
