Range of farm buildings attached to rear of Broadley Farmhouse (qv)
including barns, shippons and possibly a cider house. Circa C17 and C18
extended in circa mid C19. Slate stone rubble. Hipped slate roof, bitumen
coated.
Plan: Overall L-shaped range. The short wing of the L is a barn adjoining
and possibly integral with the rear right hand end (north east) of the
farmhouse. The barn has what is possibly an integral cross-wing at the
north end which may have contained the cider house. The cross-wing was
extended in the C19 to the west as a long row of shippons with lofts above
forming a long rectangular courtyard at the back of the house. The west
end of the C19 shippon range has been converted to a house.
Exterior: The barn at the east end has 2 doorways facing the courtyard
with slated canopies. The long range of shippons at right angles and
parallel with the farmhouse has shippon doorways facing the courtyard on
the ground floor with segmental brick arches and ventilation holes on the
first floor of the earlier right hand (east) end. Where the left (west)
end of the shippon has been converted to a house there are C20 casements on
the first floor and 2 garage doorways on the ground floor. The ground at
the back (north) is at higher level and there is a loft door at the left
(east) end and a small C20 wing to the converted house part to the right
(west).
Interior: The barn has trusses with collars lapped and pegged to the face
of the principals. The loft over the north end of this range has a small
fireplace; its chamfered lintel has stepped stops and the floor is
supported on reused chamfered beams. The roof over the shippon range to
the west has bolted softwood scissor trusses.
