House, converted into a row of cottages. Probably C16, remodelled in late
C17 or C18 and extended probably in C18. Roughened stone rubble. No 3 to
the left has slate roof with half-hipped end. Nos 1 and 3 have roof at
slightly higher level with gabled ends and asbestos slates. Rendered
chimney stacks: at right hand gable end, axial stack to left of centre and
rear lateral stack to right of centre which has set-offs and slate
weathering.
Plan: Probably a 3 room and through passage plan house, the higher end to
the left. Originally probably at least the hall was open to the roof, the
evidence for which is some reused smoke-blackened principal rafters. In
the late C17 or early C18 a floor was inserted with a stack backing onto
the passage at the lower end of the hall. The inner room is unheated but
the lower room to the right is heated from a rear lateral stack. The range
was extended by a one-room plan addition at the lower right end, possibly
in the C18 when the house was divided into three cottages.
Exterior: 2 storeys hung asymmetrical approximately 7-window range of late
C19 and C20 2 and 3-light casements with glazing bars, 3 doorways with C20
glazed bars and asbestos slated canopies each with one side wall. 2 single
storey flat roof extensions at rear and another at left end.
Interior: the 2 left hand rooms in No 3 possibly the former hall and wine
rooms have chamfered cross beams with run-out stops. The passage in No2 of
the centre has large square section joists and plank and muntin screen on
the left side which has unchamfered muntins on the passage side and is
plastered on the lower room side; this room has cross joists with bead
moulding and a rear lateral fireplace with an unchamfered timber lintel and
stone rubble joints. No 1 is the addition of the lower right end; and has
lightly chamfered ceiling beams and a blocked gable end fireplace with a
framed stair to the side of the stack.
Roof: straight principals with pegged joints; some of the principals are
reused and smoke blackened and have mortices for threaded purlins.
