Brookside and Brookside Cottage

(Formerly listed as Brookside)

1.8.74.

II
Now part of White Hermitage Hotel. Italianate stucco villa, circa 1850, included partly for historical reasons - John Keble stayed here from October 1865 and died here in March 1866 - but mainly for picturesque quality of south-east corner tower on eminence above Pleasure Gardens. Tower four-storey with coupled windows, round-arched and flat headed, on first and second floors, 'belfry' stage with triplet windows of thin stepped Moorish type, capped by pyramidal slate roof. South front of three storey house has continuous balconies on two upper floors between tower and three-storey canted bay under gable at south-west corner. Overhanging eaves.
