3/77 Barn and
farmbuilding range,
40 metres north-
east of Byer's
Garth Farmhouse
GV II
Barn and adjoining farmbuilding range at west. Much altered, probably mid C17
barn and early C19 west range. Squared coursed sandstone barn with pantiles,
Welsh slates and corrugated-asbestos sheets on roof. Squared stone west range
with brick dressings and slate roof. L-plan: barn with C19 range at right-
angles on west bay.
Tall single-storey barn. Originally 7 bays with added bay on west. Altered
and C20 openings. Blocked opposing doors near centre. 2 rows of scattered,
blocked triangular vent holes on front and rear. Steeply-pitched roof with
swept eaves.
2-storey, 5-bay west range has brick quoins. Partly-blocked elliptical brick
archways on ground floor facing yard and keyed-oculus pitching eye on west
face. Low-pitched hipped roof.
Interior of barn has 6 original adzed roof trusses of heavy scantling with
cambered tie beams and curved Queen posts supporting high collars. Some
original purlins. Later intermediate trusses and cross bracing.
West range included for group value. Altered parallel east range is not of
special interest. Though altered the barn is a rare-C17 survival retaining
a largely original roof structure.
