Lead and barytes mine lodging shop. Probably mid C19 for London Lead Company.
Coursed rubble with quoins and ashlar dressings; graduated stone-flagged roof
with stone chimneys and square yellow pots. 2 storeys, 3 bays with pent left
addition of one storey, one bay. Flat stone lintel over central boarded door.
Similar lintels and projecting stone sills to flanking and first-floor square
openings, some with 4 empty lights; that over door blocked. Roof has 3 ridge
chimneys, with top strings, at ends and at right of second bay. Interior
plastered, with central enclosed stair; cast iron kitchen range, in left
ground-floor room, by Henry Down, Barnard Castle; chamfered stone lintel
over fire in right room; partition walls in right bay form 2 small ground-
floor rooms, one with stone shelf.
Mine drainage level entrance. Probably mid C19. Sandstone blocks form
round-headed rough arch with voussoirs. Included for group value.
The London Lead Company was notable for providing lodging shops for its
miners post 1818.
