On common boundary of the Parishes of Broxted and Thaxted, and previously
listed on 7 February 1952 in the Parish of Thaxted.
Fine Tudor brick moated manor house, with earlier wing, and formerly much more
extensive. Originally built circa 1470, but except for the south wing, was
demolished in early C16 by Sir John Cutte who built a fine brick quadrangular
house on the site. In the C17 and C18 various parts of the house were demolished,
including the chapel. 1840-50 the remaining building was restored.
The Great Hall has a fine oriel window, there is a staircase tower on the north
side and the south wing has a fine open timber ceiling, partially exposed.
The moat is partly walled. (RCHM6).
