Inner Gate House, C16. Red brick built with black end patterning.
Stone dressings to windows, parapets and crenellations and a stone Coat of Arms
above Coutyard archway. Crenellated, octagonal turrets to each corner, of 3
storeys, the South/East with origional solid tread staircase. The East face
turrets are diapered and panelled in 3 stages, each with a band of trefoil
moulded bricks. The block between the turrets, above the archway, is of two
storeys, each comprising a large room, with stone mullion and transomed windows
to East and West faces. The block has gabled parapets of brick and stone panels
with a stone final. There is a moulded stone archway to West face and a
moulded brick archway to East face. The stone arch with fleur-de-lys and rose
decoration spandrels, the brick with shields. There are 4 fine decorated,
moulded red brick octagonal chimney stacks, 3 recessed arches and other remains
of former buildings on this site, after 1536, when the priory of the
Augustinian Canons was dissolved and mainly demolished. Restorations were
carried out early C20 by Chancellor. The boundary of Felsted in Uttlesford and
Great and Little Leighs in Chemlsford runs through the site. The stone
hexagonal conduit, in the Gothic style, is listed Grade II, TL 71 NW 2/149 in
Great and Little Leighs, as are the 2 barns situated to the south of Leez
Priory, built of C16 red brick with red plain tile roofs and some original
windows, the east barn of 5 bays and the west barn of 6 bays, TL 71 NW 2/152.
The major part of the Inner Gate House lies Felsted. RCHM 2.
