5/146 Court Farm House
- II
Farmhouse, now house. C17 modification of probably C15 hall-house, with
substantial C20 alterations. Rubble, rendered, pantiled roof with raised coped
verges and gable stacks. East front of 2 storeys and 4 windows, ground floor
has 3 and 4-light C20 casements with glazing bars, first floor has 3-light C20
casement right and left, 2 small wooden 2-light windows with trefoiled heads and
iron lattice to centre, probably mid C20 copies, off-centre door with sidelight
in gabled porch on piers. Right return has blank gable end, left return has
small 2-light casement at ground floor right, roof extended to left over single
storey addition with door in gabled porch and single light. Rear has glazed
door to left, 3 C20 casements at first floor, single storey addition has roof
hipped to left, two 2-light casements to rear and 2 single lights to left side.
Interior: south end of roof, 2 bays, re-roofed in C17, at north end 4 trusses
remain, principal rafters, moulded arched-braces and cambered collars, one row of
purlins and windbraces remaining in lower tier. One moulded corbel front and
rear remaining at bases of trusses, the wall-top is a plastered-over timber,
possibly cornice plate. Wall thickness and details suggest that c.1500 , the
house was rebuilt with the large fireplace at north gable and with the 4-bay
braced roof. (Sources: Report of Somerset VAG, August 1981).
