ST 35 NE BANWELL BANWELL HILL

4/6 Banwell Monument

G.V. II

Monumental tower. Early/mid C19. Coursed rubble, freestone dressings.
3 stage octagonal tower, quoins where faces meet; each stage slightly set back
above a moulded and twice weathered string, cornice missing from top stage;
surmounted by an octagonal ashlar lantern with decorated cornice; only north and
south faces have openings; to north each stage has a stilted arch window under a
plain dripmould; louvres and decorative panels remain only in the top stage on
this face; north side of lantern has collapsed; to south, similar windows at
first and second stages and similar opening to lantern; at ground level is a
door with a Tudor arched plain surround under a dripmould. One of an extensive
set of picturesque estate features erected by the antiquarian Bishop Law of
Bath and Wells on his Banwell estate.
