5/183 Gatehouse to south of Trewane and
garden walls to south west, south,
6.6.69 south east and north east
(previously listed as gatehouse at
Trewarne Manor and flanking walls)
GV II
Garden walls and gatehouse. Circa early C17 with some circa C19 work reusing C17
material. Stone rubble with granite dressings.
Garden walls to south-west, south and south-east of Trewane (qv) enclosing garden to
front of house. Walls continue around raised terrace to east and to rear of house on
north-east. Two reset early C17 four-centred granite arches in walls near front of
house on south-west and south-east and third reset circa early C17 4-centred granite
arch in rear wall to north-east.
To south of the house, in line with the central entrance is a structure known as the
gatehouse. It was possibly built in the C19 as a folly reusing circa early C17
dressed granite. It comprises the front and side walls of a two storey roofless
building, built into the side of a steeply sloping bank. The ground floor, which is
below the ground level of the house and gardens, has a one light mullion window in
the left hand (west) wall. A flight of steps, largely comprised of reused granite
chamfered jambs and mullions leads up to the large granite segmental arched entrance
in the first floor. This arch is directly opposite the central entrance of Trewane
and forms an impressive gateway.
