House. Dated 1908, by Sir Mervyn Macartney in a Free Artisan Mannerist Style.
Red brick with string course, brick quoins and gauged window heads with alter-
nating projecting voussoirs and keystones: moulded brick eaves cornice to
tiled roof. 2 projecting wings with large shaped gables, 2 central hipped
dormers with casements and 4 asymmetrically placed rusticated stacks with
cornices. Irregular plan with service wing to east. 2 storeys and attic. 5
bays. Leaded cross windows, centre bay recessed with first floor 8-light
mullioned and transomed window. Central porch with parapet and 2 obelisks,
rubbed brick arch with keystone, and rusticated Doric pilasters supporting
segmental pediment. 2 storey wing to left of 2 bays with cross windows. Service
wing to far left of 2 storeys with hipped tile roof, tile hung first floor,
2 gables and 2 stacks. 2 storey, 2 bay wing to right with cross windows and
central stack with plaque consisting of open triangular pediment with M.G.W.E.
and date in tympanum. Low brick forecourt walls with wrought iron railings,
rusticated brick piers with ball finials. South front: cross windows with aprons.
Central projection has 2 shaped gables with stone sundial between. 3 first floor
windows and 3 ground floor windows. 2 storey hipped canted bay set back to left,
2 storey hipped canted bay set back to right, with one window on each floor to
its right. 2 storey service wing to right with tile hung first floor, first
floor casements, 4 ground floor casements and loggia to left with 2 columns.
West front:: hipped dormer to right: projection to left with shaped gable and
2-storey canted bay rising to cornice, with parapet. First floor cross window
to right: glazed loggia beneath with Tuscan columns. Interior: plan and some
interior fittings remain, including fireplaces. BOE, Berkshire, p.312.
