BRAMPFORD SPEKE
SX 99 NW
3/17 The Avenue
18.11.76
II
Substantial house. East wing of circa 1840 plus north-west wing of 1900, rendered
with slate roof with gabled ends with pierced wavy bargeboards and end stacks. 2
storeys. The circa 1840 house was symmetrical until additions of a narrow north
(right-hand) bay in circa 1900. 3 + 1 bays. Central gabled 2-storey porch on thin
wooden columns and pilasters with cushion capitals and bases. Porch gable has
similar bargeboards and tall wooden finial. Tripartite sashes with glazing bars,
ground floor with sills almost at ground level and with cornices on console
brackets. First floor windows have segmentally arched heads, centre window over
porch is of single light. The work of circa 1900 is substantial, the garden front
being a competent piece of asymmetrical, picturesque vernacular revival.
Internally the fittings are of circa 1900 with the exception of the right-hand
ground floor room which contains C17 panelling brought from George Fursden from
Cadbury. Linenfold panels below, with lozenges above on fluted background. C19
Gothick chimney piece and overmantel, looks circa 1840.
