Higher Lodge
II
House, former lodge to Offwell House (q.v). Circa 1840. Local stone and flint
rubble; stone rubble stack with cream-coloured brick divided diagonal chimneyshaft;
slate roof.
Plan: L-plan building. The main block faces north-west and contains the entrance
hall and kitchen. The main living room is a crosswing which projects forward from
the left (north-east) end. An axial stack between serves back-to-back fireplaces.
2 storeys. Tudor Gothic style.
Exterior: 1:1-window front. The front gable-end of the crosswing has a canted bay
ground floor window containing narrow lights with chamfered reveals. Above a 2-
light window with hoodmould. The gable has cusped bargeboards with an apex finial.
The main front has single light windows; the ground floor one has a hoodmould and
the first floor one has a gable over with cusped bargeboards (a miniature version of
the crosswing gable). All the windows have broad stucco architraves and chamfered
reveals. They contain late C19 and C20 casements with glazing bars. The front
doorway is next to the crosswing and it is a Tudor arch under a monopitch porch on
plain posts.
