House. C17 with a circa mid C19 wing. Stone rubble with slate roofs gabled at ends,
gable end stone stacks to the C17 block, 1 projecting, slightly projecting gable end
stacks to the C19 wing. The north block appears to be the hall and inner room of a
C17 3-room and cross passage house, the hall stack formerly backing on to the
passage. Rear outshut. The passage and lower end were dismantled when the C19 wing
was added at a right angle to the C17 block forming an L-plan. The C19 wing is
single depth with a central stair hall and when it was built the C17 house was used
as a service block to it. 2 storeys. The C17 block is now entered from the rear.
Asymmetrical 3-window front with a C20 glazed garden door on the front at the right.
2- and 3-light C19 and C20 casement windows with glazing bars, ground floor window
left under a granite lintel. The C19 wing has a symmetrical 3-bay garden elevation
with deep eaves, the central bay broken forward. Central gabled porch has timber
frame decoration in the gable and a chamfered stone doorway with a basket arch. The
garden elevation windows are 12-pane sashes with granite lintels and sills, the
ground floor windows paired to either side of the porch.
Interior The C17 block has 4 pegged trusses with threaded purlins. The first floor
room above the parlour preserves part of a mid to late C17 plaster wall frieze of
round-headed arches enriched with fruit and foliage. The hall fireplace has been
modernised and a fixed timber bench on brackets is probably early C19. The parlour
has a circa late C18 fixed cupboard on the rear wall. The interior of the C19 wing
preserves most of its high quality fittings including cornices, doors with panelled
reveals to the doorways, cornices and chimney pieces (not all in situ). The central
staircase has stick balusters and a ramped handrail.
