TL 64 SE HELIONS BUMPSTEAD CAMPS ROAD
2/24 The Old Marquis

House, C16, extended in C18 and C19. Timber framed, roughcast rendered, roofed
with red clay tiles, part handmade, part machine-made. Aligned N-S, with C18
extension at S end and C19 E extension from N end, forming an L-plan. 2 axial
chimney stacks in original range, one C19/C20 external stack at W wall at S end.
Single-storey lean-to extension to N, with slate roof elevation (towards Camps
Road), one splayed bay of 3 double-hung sash windows of 4-6-4 lights, late C19,
2 double-hung sash windows of 6 lights, late C19, and one small C20 casement
window. First floor, 3 similar sash windows. The interior has plain-chamfered
axial and transverse beams, and others boxed in, and a large wood-burning hearth
at the N end. The walls of the original building have been raised approx.
1.50 metres, C17/18, and the roof rebuilt. It was a public house, The Marquis
of Granby, until 1960.
