Farmhouse. Formerly mid C14 hall house, cross wing added
c1470. Altered c1550, minor C19 or C20 alterations. Plastered
and colourwashed timber frame. Roof of concrete tiles.
PLAN/EXTERIOR: 2-storey north-south wing. Cross wing at south
end of 2 storeys and dormer attic. West front with late C20
stud and plank door left of centre. One 2-light and one
3-light C20 casement either side. Former doorway in angle with
south wing blocked. One first-floor mid C16 3-light
hollow-mullioned window. Gabled roof with late C16 ridge stack
set right of centre with 4 continuous diamond flues. East
front is a 3-window range. Half-glazed C20 opposing door set
behind C20 conservatory. Fenestration of 2- and 3-light C19
casements except for central first-floor window which is mid
C16 with 3-light hollow-moulded mullions. Cross wing to south
with C20 2- and 3-light casements. Attic wall plate with
mortices for projecting mullioned windows to east and west
sides lighting former late C15 first-floor solar.
INTERIOR: opposing doorways lead to screens passage. Mid C14
timber plank and muntin screen with central opening squared in
C20. Muntins are chamfered. Traces of red ochre paint remain.
To south is former open hall, floored c1550: bridging beams
with double wave mouldings to their west half, plain chamfered
to east half. Timber frame of heavy scantling, the principal
posts hollow chamfered. Wide brick fireplace inserted late C16
under chamfered bressumer. North room formerly service rooms:
C17 chamfered bridging beams. To east of stack a C20 winder
staircase. South cross wing has two chamfered bridging beams
with raised tongue stops with triangular incised motifs.
First-floor hall inserted c1550 and north-south range
re-roofed. 4 bays. Hollow chamfered wall posts with jowled
tops carry arched braces with roll and hollow mouldings
supported on polygonal moulded corbels. Braces continue into
cambered tie beams with continuous roll and hollow mouldings.
One tier of wave moulded joists butt into tie beams. Double
wave moulded ridge piece. North tie beam is straight cut to
rear (north side) and the arched brace rests on a terminal
corbel. Blackened joists north of this (with different
moulding pattern) suggests site of mid C16 stack. Roof of two
tiers of butt purlins, collars and curved windbraces. Cross
wing. Frame with jowled principal posts. Queen-strut roof with
curved windbraces and cambered collars.
