The Old Corn Mill with attached pigsty and stable
II
Corn mill, now furniture workshop, with attached pigsties and stables, now
stores. Late C18 with C19 additions. Coursed squared limestone, purple
slate roof. 3 storeys, approximately 6 bays with near-contemporary
additional 3 bays at south end. 2 pigsties and 2-storey, 2-bay stables
attached at right-angles to right. South gable end: round arch with double
board doors to left, lower blocked arch to right. 3 square recesses above.
First floor: blocked central loading door with cambered head, flanked by
square windows with projecting stone sills and cambered arches, right window
blocked. Narrow blocked window in gable, base of ashlar stack above. Left
return: square windows with cambered arches and projecting sills, most
blocked. Right return: 3 board doors, that to right with overlight.
Windows as front with side-sliding sashes with glazing bars. Attached range
at right-angles: left - 2 pigsties with low board doors, iron ventilation
grills and feeding chutes. Right - 2-storey, 2-bay cart-shed and stable
with hayloft over. Gritstone quoins and dressings to front, brick gable
walls. Double door left, with large lintel, loading door above with
alternate quoined surround. Stable door on right has chamfered surround.
Window with 4-pane sash to right and window opening above. Interior: mill
machinery intact, including cogs, chutes, millstones. Wheelhouse to rear
(north end) of main range, wheel no longer in place.
