Description

SE 35 SE PLOMPTON PLOMPTON HALL

5/233 Cart shed approximately
30 metres north of
Plompton Hall Farmhouse

GV II

Cart shed with storage over. c1760. Probably built as part of the planned
farm scheme for Daniel Lascelles' estate. Coursed gritstone, Westmorland
slate roof. 2 storeys, 5 bays. Board doors to ground and first floor left.
Fixed window with glazing bars to right of ground-floor door. 3 large
openings with shallow segmental arches and voussoirs to right again. 2
square windows with wooden side-sliding ventilation shutters beneath eaves.
Shallow hipped roof. Rear (south) facade: board door with plain lintel to
left, small square window, C20 frame, right. 2 square openings and a flat-
arched entry far right, with C20 alterations. 2 small square windows under
eaves, frames decayed. Left return abuts west end of hay barn (q.v.).
Right return - one small square opening to ground and first floors. In a
planned farm of this date it was usual for the cart sheds to face north, to
protect the woodwork from the damaging effects of sun and rain. There is no
evidence for an external stair to the upper floor. The north door may
therefore have been for loading only, and the room used as a granary.
