Barn and cart-shed. Barn early C19, cart-shed C17 with C19 alterations.
Coursed squared gritstone, graduated stone slate roofs. Barn of 4 bays,
cart-shed of 3 bays and half the barn width. Barn: double board doors to
cart entrance bay 2, quoined jambs and segmental arch, with plaque above,
with incised decoration of arches and cross hatching. Byre door bay 1 has
tie-stone jambs and mucking-out window to left; bay 3 - possible byre door
reduced to window and a square window bay 4, both with plain stone
surrounds. Upper storey, bays 1 and 4: square pitching doors in plain
surrounds have sills lowered to make full-height doorways. Bulbous kneelers
heightened by additional stone course, gable copings. Left return: external
steps to board door with tie-stone jambs; row of 3 slit vents with round
heads in stone surrounds; square window in gable. Much of the stone work is
decorated with incised cross-hatching and semicircles. Cart-shed to left:
ground floor has 3 inserted cart entrances with wooden lintels supported on
2 stone pillars, that to right of rusticated masonry with projecting band.
Upper floor: 3 round arched vents with chamfered surrounds, single block
jambs and lintels. Left vent has stone blocking and projecting ledge below
to form a pigeon entrance. Small round arched opening with projecting stone
sill far right. Left return: straight flight of stone steps to door to
upper floor with deep chamfer to quoined jambs and cambered arch to lintel.
Interior: cart-shed: 2 queen-strut trusses. Included for group value.
