Railway viaduct. Mid C19. Gritstone and ashlar. 7 round arches carry the
track across a deep gorge, 3 of the arches spanning the river. Plinths and
rusticated quoins to piers. The arches are composed of massive voussoirs,
with a projecting moulded band at impost level and a roll moulding and band
at track level. Edge-tooled ashlar parapet and flat coping; the end piers
carried up as projecting copings. The inner faces of the piers have rows of
massive projecting blocks approximately half way up, adding to the
impression of strength and solidity. The viaduct carried the North East
Railway Line, the N E R Company having been formed in 1854. The line was
closed in 1964.
