Large house. Early C19 with late C18 wing to rear. Deeply-coursed, dressed
sandstone, stone slate roof. 2 storeys, 5 bays with lower 3-bay wing to rear
left and additions in rear-right angle. Entrance front: 3 steps to central
double-door with margin-light glazing, 3-pane overlight and lintel tooled as
voussoirs. Other ground-floor bays have projecting sills to sashes with glazing
bars beneath similar lintels; unequally-hung 9-pane sashes to 1st floor. Gutter
brackets, hipped roof. Ashlar stacks to rear. Left return: wing has raised quoins,
and round-arched panel enclosing added bay-window beneath 4-pane sash. Tripartite
window beneath sash on left, French window beneath 4-pane sash on right. Brick end
stack on left, ridge stack to right.
Interior: glazed partition in hall has elliptical fanlight with radial glazing bars.
Front rooms with contemporary fireplaces, that on left with Adam-style plaster
decoration, on right with wooden Ionic columns. Contemporary friezes and ceiling
centre panels. Formerly home of the Dowager Countess of Wharncliffe; curate's
house until vicarage built in 1880. Attached dwelling to rear not of special interest.
