Estate entrance gateway. c1760. By James Paine for the Earl of Scarbrough.
Ashlar magnesian limestone, wrought-iron gates. Triumphal-arched carriage
entrance flanked by side gates and end piers; quadrant wing walls with
intermediate and end piers. Gateway: plinth, band-rusticated piers. Central
arch with fluted impost band, archivolt and coffered soffit; festooned
paterae in spandrels beneath dentilled pediment. Impost band continues as
cornice with blocking course over recessed panels with side gates, each
having its own plain impost and archivolt, and links to end piers with frieze
blocks having sunken panels with paterae and cornices with flattened-dome
copings. Gates: double central gates with square bars, 3 low rails with
scrolls and 2 upper rails, the lower with scrolls and finials, the upper with
cresting of spiral twists and anthemion devices; single side gates in same
style but without uppermost rail. Quadrant walls: each has 3 rusticated
intermediate piers linked by band beneath copings; square, rusticated end
piers with fluted cornices and flattened-dome copings (right end pier
collapsing at time of resurvey).
