Gatehouse. Mid-late C16. For Hercy Sandford ( d1582). Rubble limestone, tile
roof. 2 storeys, single cell. In Tudor domestic style. Large quoins. Central
doorway has old oak door with smaller inset door; surround has moulded quoins
and Tudor-arched lintel beneath hoodmould. Heraldic panel beneath unglazed
3-light ovolo-moulded mullioned window with hoodmould; 3 carved panels over
with crested helm and weathered inscription. Crow-stepped gable with roll-
moulded copings. Left return: 1st-floor doorway. Interior: original floor
structure. Upper floor now with brick and pantile nesting holes. The heraldic
panels point to the date of construction as being between 1565 and 1582. A
Scheduled Ancient Monument.
