Pair of lodges with attached gate piers and gate; forming one dwelling.1798-
1804. Attributed to John Carr (Wragg). For William Wentworth Fitzwilliam,
4th Earl Fitzwilliam. Ashlar sandstone; graduated Welsh slate roofs;
wrought-iron gates. Symmetrical pair of square lodges with inner and
outer wing walls and central carriage gateway. Lodges: 2 storeys, single
window. Plinth, rusticated quoins to lower stage. Tall, central, round-
headed sash with glazing bars; moulded impost and archivolt all set
within recessed round-arched panel with Greek-key impost band and archivolt.
Frieze with festooned paterae; modillioned cornice. Hipped roof,
corniced central stack with paterae. Inner return of each lodge has
panelled door in architrave with plain frieze and pediment, all set
within a round-arched recess; 6-pane sash beneath archivolt. Inner wing
walls each have iron gate in round-arched opening and terminate at
rusticated piers with Greek-key band beneath frieze with swags and paterae.
Cornice surmounted by affronted statues of lions couchant. Simple
wrought-iron gates with paired horizontal rails; decorative scrollwork
and central vase finial to top rail. Outer wing walls each have blind
round-arched opening and terminate at rusticated end piers. Set on the
line of a former avenue to Wentworth Park North Lodge (q.v.).
