12/104 Sugworth Hall

II

Farmhouse now country home. C17 core extensively reworked C19, with
c1930 tower wing, probably by E. Vincent Harris, for Charles Boot.
Coursed, squared sandstone and gritstone, the earlier work of superior
finish, some later work herringbone-tooled. Stone slate roofs, ashlar
stacks. L-shaped C17 range with hall wing to right and crosswing to
rear projecting to left, the angle infilled, and with tower to rear
right. 2 storeys with 3-storey tower. Entrance front: 3 first floor
windows. C17 gabled bay to right has double-chamfered mullion windows,
on ground floor of 3 lights, and of 2 lights covered by C20 lead
sundial, all under continuous dripmould; and on 1st floor of 5 lights
under hoodmould. Panel above, carved with lion and crossed hatchets
and the motto 'DEO NON FORTUNA' under dripstone. Late C19 part to
left has 2-storey projecting gabled bay with mullion and transom
windows and on its right a projecting single-storey porch with panelled
door under Tudor-arched fanlight with carved spandrels. Single-light
window above porch. Ground floor dripmould continues from C17 bay.
Moulded kneelers and gable copings. Corniced stack to left end and to
ridge of hall wing. Right return: Original baffle-entry door to left
has arched lintel. 2-storey bay added to right. Continuous dripmould
raised over door. Tower to right has embattled corner turret with
well-dressed oriel balcony, 2-storey canted bay with mullion and
transom windows to rear, and flat roof. Interior: C17 hall: spliced
spine beam indicates position of baffle-entry against former smoke hood
and heck wall, and correlates to door in right wall. C20 wing attached
to rear left corner of range not of special interest.
