Formerly High Fernley Farm. Early to mid C19 rebuilt as 2 cottages of former
farmhouse. The C17/C18 barn and mistal forming east wing. Sandstone "brick"
elevations with stone slate roofs. Windows in squared frames mostly with late C19
or modern glazing. Squared jamb doorways. The barn is built of roughly coursed
gritstone with western outshut probably for aisle. Stone slate roof with saddlestone
to south gable end, prominent kneelers and crowning finial. Two wagon portals, one
with segmental arch, but the other chamfered with massive, kneller corbels formerly
supporting midstorey hood. The mistal was originally the house and over the doorway
is inscribed R over W H above the date 1696. The initials refer to the Richardson
family of Bierley Hall.
