Tollhouse. 1874. Rendered and painted rubblestone with rag slate roof with gable
ends and gable to right of south (front). Rendered stacks to rear and on right-hand
(east) gabled end. Single depth plan, extended to rear in outshut. i½ storeys,
asymmetrical 2 window south front.
Ground floor with C19 2-light casement and C20 casement without glazing bars. Above,
beneath gable, C19 4-pane casement. Left-hand gable end with C19 2-light casement to
ground and first floor with hoodmoulds and labels. Decorative barge boards in gable
ends and below eaves.
The tollhouse is positioned on the north east corner of Newbridge (q.v. Newbridge)
and was built to replace an earlier toll house erected by the Callington Turnpike
Trust in c 1764. Other tollhouses were also erected in by the Trust to the north,
south and east of Callington, but have all been demolished. Tolls varied from is 6d
for a carriage pulled by 6 horses to 1 penny for a horse. Turnpike cottage was
erected when Newbridge was widened in 1874 and a direct road was cut through the
hillside from Newbridge to Callington.
