Description

GWENNAP HALE MILLS
SW 74 SE SE
5/139 Hale Mills Cottage
-
GV II
Small house circa late C18 and cottage to west circa early-mid C19. Killas rubble
and possibly cob, partly rendered slate, sills. Original part has steep corrugated
iron roof, formerly thatched, and C19 part has original grouted scantle slate roof at
lower pitch. Brick chimneys over gable ends and party wall. Rounded external breast
to gable. Original house is 2-room plan with central entrance and possible stair
projection to rear at east end. Cottage is 1-room plan. 2 storeys with first floor
rooms of house partly in roof space. South front with 1-window cottage, left with
higher eaves and low 2-window house to right. Cottage adjoining left has shallow
brick arches over openings, horned 4-pane sashes and doorway to right with top-glazed
4-panel door. House has slightly irregular front with doorway towards right-hand
window. Wooden lintels. Early C20 top-glazed door and 4-pane 2-light casements to
ground floor. Original 12-pane horizontal-sliding sashes to first floor. Blocked
stair window to rear.
Interior of cottage is little altered. House was refloored in the C19, but possibly
retains original roof structure (not inspected). Recess to rear of east room may
have been original stair or fuel store. Fireplaces partly blocked.
One of the few unmodernised houses in this former mining area.
