8/215 Farmhouse on west side of
- settlement at Penpont
II
Farmhouse. Circa late C16 to early C17, extended in circa late C16 or early C17.
Rendered stone rubble. Rag slate roof with gable ends. Lower earlier 2-storey range
to left with rag slate roof with gable ends. Projecting stone rubble end stack on
right with set offs and cloam oven projection. Projecting end stack to rear right.
Stone rubble axial stack and stone rubble end stack on left hand gable end of lower
earlier range on left.
Plan: Earlier circa late C16 or early C17 range on left of 1 room plan heated by end
stack on left with stair projection on front at higher and on right; this is probably
the remains of the lower end of a larger house. In circa late C17 or early C18 the
range to right was added, probably on the site of the passage and higher end of the
earlier house. The original plan of the later build is uncertain, possibly either of
2-room and cross passage plan, heated by end stacks with kitchen at higher end on
right; stair in projection to rear of passage, rising above the eaves to provide
access to the attic; the 2 service rooms added to the rear of the right and left hand
rooms in late C18. Alternatively the late C17 or early C18 build may have been built
with a double depth plan, the service rooms being contemporary.
Exterior: Lower 2 storey range on left and higher late C17 or early C18 range on
right. The front elevation of the later range was probably remodelled in the later
C19; symmetrical 5 window front, the ground floor windows with segmental arched
openings; 4-pane sashes. Central C20 part glazed door. Range to left has C20
casement to left and stair projection to right lit by small 2-light mullion window
and 1-light casement above.
Rear elevation: Gable end to stair projection.
Interior: not accessible.
