William Butterfield's only complete country house, 1853-58, a confident Gothic
Revival design. Coursed local limestone rubble with ashlar dressings, red
brick relieving arches over windows, some chequer brick and stone work, clay
tile roofs. The main block is L-plan with a steep high roof and tall
rectangular multiple ridge stacks. North (entrance) facade has sequence of
three gables descending from left to right, the left hand half-hipped; the
projecting two storey entrance is on the right; to its left is the main
staircase which has three large traceried windows under chequer brick and
stone work. The south (garden) front has a gable on the left hand: on the
ground floor there are two 2-light windows separated by a buttress, and two 2-
light windows on the first floor. To the right is a three storey projection
from a shallow hipped gable with tall narrow bay windows culminating in an
elaborate timber gable. Four dormers in roof. Alternate stone and brick
voussoirs to windows. The east elevation has a two storey bay on the left
hand with a conical roof, two dormers and a conservatory, two ground floor
buttresses and five first floor pairs of windows. The west (river) elevation
has kitchen and sculleries recessed below terraces in front, with four gables
and three decorated roof ridges behind. Part of garden area (now Garden
Centre) defined by stone walls attached to house. Altered interior: wooden
chimney pieces with simple Gothic detailing; Gothic tracery to staircase.
