GV II
Church. Dated 1836 in stained glass of eastern window. By George
Latham of Nantwich. Yellow sandstone ashlar with slate roof. Nave and
chancel all under one roof, and undivided. Gallery to western end.
West facade: projecting plinth common to whole of building. Square
turrets to corners dying via broaches to octagonal turrets with blind
arcading to the tops and spires above. The central double doorway has
a chamfered reveal and a hood-mould ending in floral label stops.
String course above this, at which level the turrets die to their
octagonal shapes. Triple lancet above door with hood mould and floral
label stops. Central circular light to gable with gabled bell-cote
above, which has crockets and a cross to the summit. Both sides of the
building have five pairs of lancets with hood-moulds and label stops.
There are buttresses between and to the eastern end with chamfered
corners and gabled caps. The eastern end has a lean-to vestry to the
lower wall and a triple-lancet above with cusped crockets to the gable
and buttresses to either side. The church was built by Admiral
Tollemache and oriented north-south instead of east-west to be on-line
with the end of his drive from Tilstone House (q.v.)
