Farmhouse. Circa mid C18. Shale rubble with dressed granite steps, sills and arch
stones. Hipped scantle slate roof with brick chimneys over side walls, with external
stone breast on left (south).
Double depth plan of living room/kitchen, left and parlour right; wide through
passage leading to rear stair hall with stair left of centre with servants quarters
left and dairy right. Simple classical style.
2 storeys. Symmetrical 1:1:1 bay 3-window east front. Central bay broken forward
and surmounted by low pitched gable with central oculus niche with carved medallion
head. Central doorway, approached by 4 steps, original 6-panel door, original
doorcase with engaged columns with later porch added. All windows are original
casements with thick internally ovolo-moulded glazing bars. Window over door has 2-
lights with 6 panes per light. Windows to bays 1 and 3, in wide openings with flat
arches and projecting keys, have 3 lights with 8 panes per light.
Interior partly inspected, has original carpentry and joinery throughout, and some
good mid C18 features including: 6-panel doors; round arch on pilasters between
passage and stair hall; oak beams in kitchen, parlour chimney piece with fluted
pilasters, frieze, and key pattern to moulded cornice; open-well, closed string stair
with column-on-column balusters, column newels over pendants and moulded ramped
handrail; and moulded ceiling cornice over. 1-window pane is inscribed Mary Kelly,
July llth, 1820.
This is a very interesting house, classical, but with the archaic feature of wide
casements to front, and very unaltered since built.
