Boer War Memorial. Inscribed "Presented by Public Subscription,
1906". Yellow sandstone ashlar base with grey granite body and white
marble statue. Stepped base with canted corners of two steps.
Granite plinth with moulded top bearing inscription. Body of monument
has cartouche in relief and penant above inscribed DULCE ET DECORUM
EST PRO PATRIA MORI and in the cartouche is written:
WINSFORD MEN WHO DIED WHILE SERVING
IN THE SOUTH AFRICAN CAMPAIGN
1899-1902
with a list of names. On the base is inscribed
THIS MEMORIAL WAS UNVEILED BY
GENERAL RIDLEY C.B.
ON THE 24TH DAY OF NOVEMBER 1906
ARTHUR HAMLETT, CHAIRMAN ) WINSFORD URBAN
JNO. H. COOKE, CLERK ) DISTRICT COUNCIL
Left hand side inscribed at top:
WINSFORD MEN WHO SERVED IN THE REGULAR ARMY
AND SURVIVED
followed by a list of names. On the right hand side is inscribed:
WINSFORD MEN WHO SERVED AS VOLUNTEERS
AND SURVIVED
followed by a list of names including a section for the St John's
ambulance brigade.
Above this section is a moulded cornice with a white marble effigy
above of a soldier leaning on his upturned rifle with a tree trunk as
support to his right leg.
