House. Mid-C16 and late C17. Enlargements and alterations of C19 and C20.
Timber-framed, rendered on plinth with brick and clay bat to later parts.
Combed wheat reed thatch with soft red brick ridge stack of late C17 and
rebuilt upper courses. Three bays including one bay to left hand remaining
from mid C16 house. Two bays to right hand are late C17. Original C16 house
was possibly an open hall, and late C17 plan is a possible lobby entry. Two
storeys. Six mid C20 hung sashes to first floor. Extended by a clay bat
leanto in C19. This has been enlarged and re-roofed. Inside: Mid C16
timber-frame of uniform scantling with jowelled heads to posts and downward
bracing. Ground floor room has ogee stop-chamfered main beams and middle
rails, although there have been alterations to middle rail in front wall.
There are shutter grooves in front and rear walls on ground floor. Mid C16
closed truss between original bay and late C17 rebuild except for original
doorway opening, now part blocked. At first floor similar studwork and sites
for diamond mullion window. Through purlin roof with possibly later wind
bracing. This bay was possibly the solar end to an open hall. Late C17 two
bays have abutting soft red brick inglenook hearths with iron pot-hooks.
Some inserted and reset timbers. Braced tiebeams and original elm boarding.
Stop-chamfered main beams.
