Small country house. Circa early C18 (deeds from 1720). Stuccoed walls to front and
rear, outherwise painted rubble. Scantle slate hipped roofs with some original hand-
made crested clay ridge tiles. Cast-iron ogee section gutters with lions' heads to
the joints.
Plan: Double depth plan. The rear rooms of the house were remodelled circa early
C19 to create a new entrance front. Original front has 2 similar sized rooms
flanking the original entrance hall; the right-hand room is an unaltered original
parlour, the left-hand room was converted to a kitchen in the C19 and retains most of
its fittings from then. The original entrance hall leads to an early C19 stair hall
with the 2 rear rooms on either side converted to parlours at the same time. At
either side of the house are C19 shallower depth service wings. The left-hand wing
is now converted to self-contained accommodation and is known as Beau Repair.
Exterior: 2 storeys. Symmetrical 5 window north-east front with all its original
circa early C18 16-pane sashes with wide glazing bars. Central doorway has pair of
circa late C19 top-glazed doors. Wooden doorcase is probably early C19. The stucco
on the plinth and walls is also probably also early C19. Rear entrance front has
circa early C19 door and most windows: 6-panel door with doorcase; tall 24-pane stair
sash and 16-pane sashes.
Interior: The original front rooms except for the kitchen (see plan) have their
original C18 features. Parlour has full height ovolo-moulded raised and fielded
panelling, eared chimney-piece and dentilled ceiling cornice. 2-panel doors with HL
hinges to all the rooms. On the first floor there is a dressing room with doors from
both reception rooms and from the landing. The rear of the house has mostly circa
early C19 features and the floors were raised at the same time. The C19 (rear right)
reception room has moulded plaster ceiling band, and presumably resited C18 eared
chimney-piece with pulvinated frieze. The narrow open-well stair has an open string
with carved tread ends and a mahogany hand rail over stick balusters. The chambers
have early C19 chimney-pieces with roundels to the corner blocks. Rear left-hand
chamber C18 round-headed niche with shaped shelves. Roof structure not inspected
(possibly C18).
Bereppa House has some good quality features of both the early C18 and the early C19
and the early C19 remodelling of the house is an interesting compromise, an
alternative to complete rebuilding.
